Self-Publishing Panel – What I Know Now That I Wish I’d Known Sooner

Moderated by Nicole Ayers, owner and editor of Ayers Edits, members will hear from Mary Jane Capps, a young adult novelist, and  Jennifer Ruff, a psychological suspense novelist. Come hear their lessons learned to help make your journey smoother.

and ghosts-or some combination of the three.
She likes to keep things spooky, magical, and reasonably upbeat.
Mary Jane lives in Fort Mill, South Carolina with her husband and daughter,
down the road from her parents, in a house that is probably haunted.

Jenifer Ruff
IMG_3024_ruff_jeniferr_smallJenifer Ruff is the author of psychological suspense books and an avid fitness enthusiast and hiker. She has a biology degree from Mount Holyoke College, and a graduate degree in Epidemiology from Yale University. Most of her books include fact-based science and medicine in the hands of dark and twisted minds. She worked in management consulting for many years before writing and publishing. She now lives in Charlotte with her husband, three sons, and a pack of greyhounds. You can find her online at


Nicole Ayers
NICOLE280Nicole Ayers is the owner and editor of Ayers Edits. Editing is her dream job because she gets to combine her love of reading with the fun of wordplay. She is also an award-winning writer; her most recent essay, “Pink Hats,” placed in WNBA’s national writing contest. Help us support ourBRIDGE and foster an inclusive and welcome environment! Please donate or purchase children’s books for all ages to restock the ourBRIDGE library, recently damaged by water!

A little bit about the organization:  “At ourBRIDGE, students receive homework help, participate in hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering , Arts and Math) projects, and engage in a culturally relevant curriculum that emphasizes experiential learning. We provide one-on-one daily English literacy tutoring in order to accelerate the students’ acquisition of the English language. ourBRIDGE for KIDS aims to close the communication gap between school, teachers and families through the coordination of home visits, translation of school documents, and the organization of literacy nights and cultural events for parents at our center. When needed, we also provide parents transportation and translation support at teacher conferences and serve as the liaison between parents and schools.”

The program begins with a docent-facilitated discussion and is followed by a docent-led tour of the Mint’s Portals to the Past: British Ceramics exhibition. See selected works of art that help bring to life the historic events, cultural influences, and lifestyles represented in the book.

Each author will speak briefly about her or his book, and there will be plenty of opportunity for one-on-one questions and discussion. Park Road Books will sell books. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to meet these five writers and get signed copies of their new books!

  • Mark Powell, SMALL TREASONS, Gallery Books/Simon & Schuster. Powell teaches at Appalachian State University in Boone.

  • Lauren Rebecca Sklaroff, RED HOT MAMA: THE LIFE OF SOPHIE TUCKER, University of Texas Press. Sklaroff is an associate professor of history at the University of South Carolina.

  • Michele Young-Stone, LOST IN THE BEEHIVE, Simon & Schuster. Novelist Stone lives on the Outer Banks.
